At least four people were killed and four others injured in a weekend crash along the busy Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos.
The accident occurred opposite Beechwood, Shapati, involving a HOWO truck (registration KNN 313 YL) and a fully loaded Suzuki commercial mini bus, popularly called a “Korope.”
Eyewitnesses said the truck veered uncontrollably across the carriageway, crashing violently into the oncoming bus. “The collision trapped passengers in the wreckage. Four men died on the spot, while two men and two women sustained severe injuries,” one witness said.
Confirming the incident, the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said preliminary investigations indicate the truck driver lost control while in motion.
“LASTMA personnel, alongside other emergency responders and passersby, extricated the four trapped victims from the crushed mini bus,” he explained. The critically injured were rushed to Hamon Royal Hospital, while the deceased were deposited at Shency Hospital Morgue via a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) emergency ambulance.
Bakare-Oki added that officers from the Elemoro Police Division maintained order at the scene, ensuring the safety of rescue teams and other road users during the intervention.
In a troubling development, the truck driver and his motor boy fled the scene shortly after the crash, leaving authorities to investigate the cause further.
The incident has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations along the Lekki-Epe corridor, which witnesses say is prone to reckless driving and frequent accidents.
